Establishing a Network of Ecologists in Ukraine |
Welcome to the home page of the project Establishing a Network of Ecologists in Ukraine. The project aims to establish a fully-functioning active network of ecologists in Ukraine within which they can interact, exchange ideas, share knowledge and influence each other. The informal network will encourage activity of the environmental community, including ecologically conscious public organisations and individuals, and will strengthen co-operation between them. It will promote the science of ecology and its application with policymakers, natural resource managers and the public in general. A long-term objective is for the network of ecologists in Ukraine to evolve into an independent national learned society for ecology.
The proposed project is carried out with support from the Kyiv-based NGO Master Consulting. This NGO was established with UK Darwin Initiative support to realize ecological projects within Ukraine. We do not propose, plan or expect this NGO to develop into a Ukrainian learned ecological society; it is rather to support, to help in organizing and to act as catalyst for a totally new structure.
The four-year project (2006-2010) is supported by the British Ecological Society [BES] through a new initiative, the Building Capacity for Ecology Fund [BCEF], helping to create networks and societies to promote the science of ecology worldwide. The BCEF has the backing of the International Association of Ecology [Intecol]. An independent national Ukrainian learned society for ecology could eventually therefore be affiliated to Intecol.
The project is run by group of scientists who share the BES vision. From over twelve years collaboration in British-led projects, we have personal experience of correctly functioning learned societies and NGOs, a clear understanding of what is needed, a realistic appreciation of the difficulties lying in wait, the necessary energy to deal with those difficulties, and a strong desire to achieve the immediate objective of an active network of Ukrainian ecologists and to work towards the longer-term aim of an independent national Ukrainian learned society for ecology.
